Site Builder Update

Posted by Ember on September 15, 2016 at 6:35 PM

Hi guys,

Webs, our host, recently announced that all websites on Site Builder 2 will be converted to Site Builder 3 on October 10th.

The shift to the new site builder will bring a few unfortunate changes with it. We are going to have to abandon the current layout of the website. I hope to keep the general theme and color scheme together, however my biggest goals will be to simply make an attractive, easy to navigate website, so the design may change more dramatically. We will not have a sidebar on several of our application pages, such as the forums and art page. Unfortunately, this may cause a jump in bandwidth use as members will have to go to other pages to find recent forum posts. Among smaller changes, the members page will be more difficult to access and we will have to abandon the home page chatboxes or move to third party hosts for them. Updates will take significantly longer, as the editing features themselves are unwieldy and bug-ridden.

While Webs has stated that website owners cannot move back their migration date or withdraw entirely, several other site owners and I are hoping to convince them to return to voluntary Site Builder transfers.

The owner of Warrior Cats Online has created a petition outlining Site Builder 3’s weaknesses and urging Webs to allow websites to remain on Site Builder 2. The petition can be found here.

Additionally, you can contact Webs directly through the email [email protected], their help forums, the customer service line 877-611-3285, or their various social media accounts (Facebook, twitter). If Webs does decide to push the migration forward, we may be able to convince them to introduce the missing features from Site Builder 2, such as the shoutboxes and universal sidebars. To suggest these changes, you can contact Webs directly, or use the request features portion of their help pages.

Please keep all interactions with Webs civil and err on the side of formal. They’re most likely to respond positively if you clearly outline what you want changed, are polite, and use your best grammar.

Aww, then it'll be so hard to get around!

Yeah, that's my concern too.
I know that lots of members are having trouble getting into the help forums, it seems like the only way to get in is to create an entirely new email and register with that. I know this is a hassle, but the more noise we make about wanting to stay on Site Builder 2 or, at the least, adding features to Site Builder 3, the more likely we are to be heard. I've started threads about the shoutboxes and universal sidebars, it would be amazing if you vote on and comment on those, as well as on the announcement thread about the migration itself.
If you'd rather not deal with getting into the help forums, just emailing webs or posting at them on their social media accounts is a help and it only takes a few moments to sign WCO's petition.

Update: the site will be converted on November 10th, a little sooner than I was expecting. I'm toying with the idea of moving us to an entirely new host so if you know any good ones, please let me know.

Proboards is simple and free to use. If you don't pay there are going to be ads at the top, and bottom, of the pages. But it's relatively simple to manage and if you need some pointers, I'd be glad to help ya. ^-^ That is, if you happen to move the site to Proboards. Also there is no worry about the site being locked up due to bandwidth usage on Proboards. They're will just be more ads put up to "pay" for the extra site activity/bandwidth usage. The layout of Proboards is very, very different from the layout of Webs; however, there is a shoutbox at the bottom of the page, on every page. And it's fairly easy to navigate. You would likely need to have a separate site for the clan pages, though, which might be a bit of an issue, causing things to be a bit more work when updating. :/

I'm just tossing around ideas. I know some don't like the way Proboards is set up, but I thought I'd suggest it as an option anyway. *shrug*

I hope to keep the website's structure similar to how it is now, with all of the non-forum sections integrated in. Proboards works great for some sites, but I don't think it's what I'm looking for.

Yeah, I've signed the petition but I can't be bothered lately writing out anything constructive.

Perhaps you could look into Weebly or Wix? I can't say I've used them, although I've seen some weebly sites and those aren't set up like Proboards; yet weebly is different than Webs. I can't say if they can be run free, either. I haven't used anything besides Webs and Proboards to actually build websites. :/

I use Wix for my website. I like it for what my website is, but I've never tried it for something like this. But there is a lot of customization options.

I used to use Weebly for my character site, it's fairly easy to put things in place, such as pictures, texts, etc, but I'm not sure about the forums or shoutboxes..

Wait, but does this mean that after every single conversion is finished (all sites are now on sb3), nobody can make a website using sb2 anymore?

Unfortunately, Weebly did away with their forum feature a few months ago. I'd have to embed some third-party forums, which I'd like to avoid.

Site owners haven't been able to make new sites on SB3 since it was first introduced in 2012, but those of us who were originally on SB2 were allowed to pick our preferred site builder. When they finish the migrations, no one will be using SB2, regardless of which SB they started on.
