Isolation Plot Planning II

Posted by Ember on June 5, 2016 at 1:35 AM

Hey guys! In the last two Plot Planning Pages we’ve discussed a lot of good ideas, however we haven’t decided how these ideas will fit together into a one story line:

Two-legs may begin poisoning prey, which the clans mistake for planned attacks by enemy clans.

Blackpine will be killed by Seraphgaze, prompting Lionstar to seek revenge. However, he does not want to be seen openly attacking and orders his warriors to stalk along the border and look for discreet ways to undermine DawnClan’s security. While walking along the border, the NightClan patrol discovers a small fire caused by a cigarettes thrown from a car and help fuel the fire before returning to their territory.

The fire plot is related to potentially polluting the river, but he ash itself wouldn't be the main polluter, as the fire would stay relatively small and not burn down whole trees, mainly lower-growing plants and leaf litter. We can just use it to cause an algal bloom, then the resulting fallout from that. We can exaggerate the following fish kill, which NightClan could use to their advantage, even if it’s a consequence they didn't originally expect. As well, ideas have been thrown about involving NightClan polluting the water in other ways, possibly with two-leg trash or even with the bodies of other dead cats and prey.

Riversoul and Alienfish brought up the possibility of clans bringing in spies, possibly beginning with apprentices in meetings and later escalating to clans sending in cats pretending to be changing clans. As these spies are found, a witch-hunt may begin among the clans as they attempt to root out other potential spies among cats who had recently joined the camp.

Toxic and I have also been tossing back and forth a few ideas of where to carry this plot, focusing on SunClan:

SunClan can become a scapegoat for the apprentices meeting up and the other problems that have been occurring between the clans, a sentiment that will be particularly strong in NightClan. Today, Lightningdance and Leopard-dance took their kits to the Gathering Clearing to show them to their friend, Nightfall. Hel, a SunClanner, caused accidentally caused their three kits to die. A fight broke out, witnessed by Darkstar and a SunClan patrol originally sent to bring back Aloepaw. Lionstar hears of the kits’ death and decides to pin some additional murders on SunClan and may try and convince MoonClan and DawnClan to put SunClan “back in its place”. This acts as a departure from total isolation, however we can approach the alliance as only temporary.

The three clans can attack SunClan, which will force their leadership to crack down on their members to ensure the other clans can’t pin any more trouble on the SunClan. At the most dramatic, this could entail both Darkstar and Zenithrose being killed and a tyrannical cat taking control, or we can take a more moderate approach by having the existing leadership begin to very strictly enforce rules to keep their cats in line. Halo, Command, would you be willing to have your characters removed from their positions or dramatically change their leadership style?

So, we need to decide how to stitch this all into a coherent plot and build a rough time-line for everything. As summer has started and most of our members will be on vacation, I expect a jump in activity over the next few months, so we should be keeping the plot moving fairly quickly to keep everything interesting, but still slowly enough to allow room for side plots.

Ooh, having DawnClan be the ones most pressured for food would be an interesting turn.
I?m not sure if we?ll still be going with NightClan attacking SunClan, it looks like it might actually be better if we keep the four clans as having relatively separate plots. As you were suggesting, we can continue to have NightClan causing trouble, but perhaps we can bring in their own brand of tyrannical leaders? Poppystar could begin operating a very harsh new leadership style, that acts fairly opposite of SunClan?s: everyone feeds themselves, harsh training (unsheathed claws during battle training), banishing cats seen as weak?
We don?t seem to have anything planned out for MoonClan yet, but that plan sounds great. They could be the ones starting the spies, as Aspenstar hears rumors of what?s going down in the other clans. Their actions could be passed off as ?attempting to build stability? when they send in spies to challenge leadership in othelans and discover what is happening there.

Hm, looks like I should bring back the ?planned events? section on the information page, there will be a lot to keep track of if we do have four largely separate plots going on at once.

(Thanks Ebony for the summary :D)

I especially like the DawnClan plot, I think the internal conflict will be super fun. The tyrannical NightClan will be great too, since I have only been around while the more diplomatic leaders were in charge. The more reserved MoonClan plot sets up future plots quite nicely, given how much information and influence the spies will gather.

I just thought I'd add my support, since I can't think of anything else. :)

I'm surprised nobody has thought of interclan loves. Higher ups like medicine cats or leaders if they are single.

Actually, I believe that Runningwish was the one who suggested that on the last plot planning page. If I recall correctly, it was decided against because we're looking for more isolation, and having a relationship would promote the opposite of this. Plus, it was done with some past characters such as Jetstar and Bluestar. Forgive me if I missed anything from the last discussion.

I don't think we should focus on interclan romance between leaders or medicine cats, but we could have a few couples between SunClan and other clans, to push Darkstar further toward wanting to keep his clan in line. We'd have to start it soon, though, for it to work correctly in the plot.

Where are we with the battle in SunClan Territory? I'm a tad unclear as to whether or not that ended or has just slowed down.

It ended, the SunClanners ran off.

I think the harsh rule in Nightclan would be a great idea, and it could also be like a pusher of some sorts to make Darkstar and Zenith work harder to make a statement like "Look at Nightclan, look at how tough they are. Aren't we clearly better? WE'RE in line and WE have order." It would bring a huge wave of nationalism spreading through the camp. Could there be a sort of plot weaved around the clans' egos?

That?s how the isolation could eventually be broken, one of the clans can prove their strength and attack another, possibly DawnClan, who runs to, say, MoonClan to defend themselves? That will all be a while off, though.

Perhaps to add to the stricter lifestyle of SunClan, Darkstar and Zenithrise could pardon or turn a blind eye to Hel's sometimes abusive treatment of her kits, with the mindset that they do later become loyal and fierce warriors. (Granted that she doesn't main, murder, or otherwise do anything worse than a couple scratches of course.)

We can extend that to turning a blind eye toward more abusive practices in general.

To borrow an idea from Sunkenstar's rule, NightClanners can start having queens return to being warriors early, while the kits will all be under the care of one or two non-fighting cats such as the medicine cats or elders.

I suppose that if a warrior is to become a queen, she must stay in her warriors position for awhile before she retires to the nursery in NightClan? Or, that may be to cruel, but i'm just putting it out there.

Sure, like the she-cat will continue her warrior duties for the duration of her pregnancy, then only stay with her kits while they?re nursing, then return as quickly as she can to her warrior duties?

Is this only going to be for NightClan, or will we add either it or a less extreme (or more extreme, if we want) version of it to some of the other clans too?

I think pushing queens toward taking a more active role in defending the clan could take on a different meaning in SunClan. Instead of having them hunting and on patrols, queens would be pushed forward as the moral center of the clan, and a lot of importance can be placed on them indoctrinating their kits with the clan's values.

Oh, yeah, that would be really good for building up the tension and more strict lifestyle in SunClan.

Are we trying to build any tension between MoonClan and DawnClan? Immortaltruth was injured in a fight with Seventhpaw, but he's going to lie about what happened, since he was the one who started it, so if we're trying to build tension I can have him say he was attacked by an unnamed DawnClanner, unprovoked, if we want tension. If not, I can just say it was a fox.

Yes, the ways between NightClan and SunClan are currently not so different, so maybe pushing the pregnant queens to do all of their work as a warrior is a good idea.

Perhaps, just to move forward on the planning, a big snowstorm could come through, as a surprise to the clans as it is the end of leaf bare. Or, perhaps next leaf bare that could happen, the possibilities are endless.
